Do you need the classic controller when playing Virtual Console Sega games?

I know that you need the controller for Nintendo 64, and the NES and SNES games, but when reading the description, it didnt mention Sega or TurboGrafx. I want to buy Sonic 2, but didn't know if I needed to buy the controller for it.

1. You don't need the classic controller for any games if you have a GameCube controller. I don't know about Sonic 2, but I did NOT need the classic controller for Sonic 1, I just used the Wii Remote. All of the Genesis games I've downloaded have worked fine with the Wii Remote.
2. The classic controller can play NES, SNES, N64, Genesis, and Turbografix16 games. The wii remote can play NES, Turbografix16, and some Genesis games. The gamecube controller NES, SNES, N64, and some Genesis and Turbografix16 games.
