Arcade Machine using MAME as main software?

i was wondering if i could make my P3 cpu into an arcade machine using the MAME software, i am currently researching on how to make an Arcade Cabinet. just wanted to know if the feeling is still the same even though it runs on a computer. [joysticks will be used for the game]. and is it cheap to actually produce this kind of machine? Thanks in advance!

I say the first on should be a simple design. simple controls. After the first one you see what you need to improve. Also you learn what works and how it works. I usually suggest people to buy a old arcade cabinet. Some people give them away buy I don't ever pay more than $50 for one that I'm turning into MAME. Also with thew use of a frountend program like GameEX you can use the console emulators, jukebox, and other plug-ins.
